Fall is a season of transition — and your nails feel it too. Cooler temperatures, drier air, and the general busyness of September through November can all take a toll on your gel set. The good news? With a few simple habits, you can extend the life of your manicure significantly.

Why Gel Nails Lift or Chip Faster in Fall

Gel nails are cured with UV light to create a hard, long-lasting finish — but they're not indestructible. In fall and winter, two main culprits cause premature lifting:

  • Dry skin and cuticles: When the skin around your nail shrinks and dries, it can pull at the gel edge and cause lifting.
  • Temperature fluctuations: Going from cold outside air to warm indoor heat repeatedly causes the nail plate to slightly expand and contract, weakening the bond over time.

Our Top Tips for Longer-Lasting Gel Nails

1. Moisturize Daily — Including Your Cuticles

This is the single most impactful thing you can do. Apply a cuticle oil at least once a day (we love applying it at night before bed). Keeping the skin around your nails soft and hydrated prevents the lifting and peeling that comes from dry, pulling cuticles. Hand cream after washing your hands is equally important — just avoid applying it right before bed in a way that coats the nail surface heavily.

2. Wear Gloves When Cleaning

Harsh cleaning products — dish soap, bleach, bathroom cleaners — are some of the fastest ways to break down the gel bond. Protect your set with rubber gloves whenever you're doing housework or washing dishes. It takes 10 seconds to put them on and saves you from a prematurely lifted set.

3. Avoid Using Your Nails as Tools

We know, we know. But using your nails to open cans, peel stickers, or scrape surfaces is one of the most common reasons gel chips. Try using the pads of your fingers instead — it's a small habit change that makes a real difference.

4. Keep Your Nails Dry After Getting Them Done

Avoid soaking your nails in water for at least 24–48 hours after your appointment. The gel needs time to fully cure and adhere, and prolonged water exposure right after application can compromise the bond. This means skipping long baths and being gentle when washing your hair right after your appointment.

5. Book a Fill Before You Need One

Gel manicures typically last 2–3 weeks. As your nails grow, the gap at the base becomes a weak point where lifting starts. Booking a fill appointment at the 2-week mark rather than waiting until you notice significant growth will keep your set looking fresh and prevent any catching or breaking.

When to Come In for a Fresh Set

If you're noticing significant lifting (more than 1–2 nails), chipping at the tips, or if it's been more than 3 weeks, it's time for a fresh set. Trying to peel or remove gel at home can damage the nail plate significantly — always come see us for a proper soak-off and removal.
